What is Keats?

Keats is a native Markdown editor for macOS. As you write, it suggests the next few words as grey ghost text in your own voice. You accept a suggestion, or you keep typing and it goes away.

How much does Keats cost?

The editor is free, with no account. To use AI you bring your own provider key at no cost to us, or you subscribe to Keats AI. Plus is $5 a month and includes $5 of AI credit. Pro is $20 a month and includes $20 of credit.

Which Macs does Keats run on?

macOS 12 Monterey or later, on Apple silicon. There is no Intel build, and no Windows, Linux, iPad or iPhone version.

Does Keats send my documents anywhere?

Only the part you ask AI to work on. The app calls your AI provider directly, so your text never passes through Keats servers. Turn the AI features off and nothing leaves the Mac at all.

Which AI models can Keats use?

OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Moonshot, Z.AI, Qwen Cloud, NVIDIA NIM, Hugging Face, StepFun, Xiaomi MiMo, and any OpenAI-compatible service. LM Studio runs models on your own Mac without a key. Autocomplete and rewriting can use different models, so a fast small model can suggest while a stronger one rewrites.

Does Keats work without an internet connection?

The editor works offline in full. AI suggestions need a connection, unless you point Keats at LM Studio and run the model on your own Mac.

How do I accept a suggestion?

Press Tab to take the whole suggestion, or ⌘→ to take one word. To rewrite text you have already written, select it and press ⌘I. The cleaner version appears beside the original, and you accept it or leave it.

Where does Keats keep my API key?

In the macOS Keychain. It never reaches our servers. Each provider keeps its own key, so switching services cannot send the wrong credential.

Does unused AI credit roll over?

No. Each monthly payment starts a new allowance. When the credit runs out, the AI features pause until the next payment, or until you connect your own provider. The editor keeps working either way.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Open the account panel in the app or on this website and choose to manage your subscription. Cancelling stops the next payment. Your plan and any remaining credit run to the end of the period you have paid for.

Does Keats track me?

No. There is no analytics of any kind. The speed and acceptance figures under Settings are counted on your Mac and stay there; they never include document text. The privacy policy sets this out in full.

Can Keats read the other files in my folder?

Only with your permission, and only for Markdown files in the folder you have opened. It uses short extracts to keep a suggestion relevant to the piece you are writing. You can turn folder context off in settings.

What files does Keats open?

Ordinary .md, .markdown, .mdown, .mkd and .txt files, in the folders where you keep them. Double-click one in Finder and Keats takes it. There is no library and no import step.

Which languages does Keats write in?

British and American English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch. Choosing a specific one also pins the spelling.
